As the end of the year approaches, we take a look back at the ten biggest analysis articles on just-drinks over the last 12 months.

10. Chile’s winemakers caught out by Brexit “disease”

June 2016, and Adolfo Hurtado, the gregarious chief winemaker & general manager for Concha y Toro’s Cono Sur, is in a sunny mood as he goes about his day at the Chilean winery. “I remember walking from the office to the tasting room,” Hurtado tells just-drinks at the Cono Sur estate in Chimbarongo last week. “I thought, ‘Today I feel that it is one of those days when all the stars are aligned’. Everything was so smooth.” He pauses. “And then it hit.”

9. Anheuser-Busch InBev’s purchase of SABMiller – The Divestments – data

In late-2015, Anheuser-Busch InBev completed the US$103bn acquisition of its main rival, SABMiller. ABI started its move in September 2015, when it notified SAB’s board that it was lining up an offer. Over the ensuing 13 months, a raft of SAB assets were offered for sale as ABI looked to navigate anti-competition hurdles. Here, just-drinks details all the subsequent divestments that ABI completed as part of its pursuit of SAB.

8. Why is the soft drinks sector losing the recycling game?

A report from Greenpeace early in the year condemned the world’s largest soft drinks producers for not doing enough to address ocean pollution caused by plastic bottles. The report is particularly critical of the lack of progress on bottle re-use, which suggests to Ben Cooper that this may have to feature more prominently in sustainability strategies if further damaging criticism is to be avoided.

7. Most Valuable Spirits Brands in 2017 – The facts

In March, brand valuation consultancy Brand Finance released its lists of the most valuable beer and spirits brands, globally. Here’s a rundown of the top 50 spirits brands.

6. Has sustainability become as important to investors as financial performance?

For the first time, Dutch brewer Heineken has merged its sustainability report into its main annual report. The increased investor interest in sustainability, coupled with the need to account for risks related to climate change, make it likely more major companies will follow suit.

5. What is set to shape the future for the drinks industry? – just-drinks at Drinktec 2017

Held every four years in Germany and hosting the biggest global names, Drinktec is the Olympics of the drinks industry’s trade show calendar. Nothing else has the same insight into beverage innovation, whether from a packaging, flavourings or labelling perspective. But, like the Olympics, Drinktec is massive – a cavernous experience that can defeat even the hardiest of trade show attendees. Luckily, just-drinks’ news & insights editor, Andy Morton, travelled to Munich earlier this month to digest the enormity of it all and deliver these nine bite-sized nuggets of learning.

4. Diageo performance trends 2013-2017 – results data

In late-July, Diageo released its full-year results for fiscal-2017. The group saw its sales in the 12 months to the end of June rise by 4% in organic terms on the year-prior. Here, just-drinks considers Diageo’s performance over the past five years.

3. What do the new IWSR figures tell us about global spirits trends?

Looked at from a distance, there is a solidity to the most recent IWSR figures for the global spirits industry. Sales were up 4.4% in calendar 2016, with growth in major markets including the US (+3.8%), global Travel Retail (+6.1%) and China (+5.4%). But what lies under the hood of the annual report? Analysts at Exane BNP Paribas have dug deep into the numbers to uncover the emerging trends in global spirits. Here, just-drinks takes a look at some of the prevailing winds on show.

2. How the new business environment is hampering big drinks companies

Consumer goods – including alcohol and soft drinks – are approaching a “challenging crossroads”, according to one analyst group, thanks to a number of factors including the growing mistrust of big brands. The “Sphere of Despair”, posited by Barclays in a client note earlier this year, was revisited in detail during the company’s recent Global Consumer Staples Conference. The argument runs that global drinks groups – including the likes of Pernod Ricard, Anheuser-Busch Inbev, The Coca-Cola Co, Rémy Cointreau and Brown-Forman – are combating a lack of consumer trust in big brands, lower barriers to market entry and diminished pricing, coupled with “potentially unrealistic near- and long-term targets”.

1. The Vodka Category – Everything you need to know – just-drinks Spirits Essentials

As part of our Spirits Essentials series, just-drinks and The IWSR present a comprehensive guide to the vodka category.
