Radico Khaitan has announced details of an Indian whisky that has been finished in Cabernet Sauvignon casks.

Rampur Asava, which launches this month in the UK and US, represents a world first, according to the distiller: Having been matured in American Bourbon barrels, the single malt’s move to wine barrels – sourced from an Indian wine producer – is a departure from usual practices.

The no-age-statement expression sits alongside Select and Double Cask – launched exactly a year ago – in Rampur’s portfolio, as well as limited editions Sherry PX and Signature Reserve.

“The diverse weather conditions at the distillery [in the Himalayan foothills] have enabled us to be creative and experiment with our single malts,” said master distiller Anup Barik. “I wanted to see how the dark fruit flavours of an Indian Cabernet Sauvignon would develop the flavour of Rampur Single Malt Whisky. I am delighted with the results … .”

As well as Rampur, Radico Khaitan owns 8PM whisky, Magic Moments vodka, Contessa rum and Old Admiral Brandy.
