Jackson Family Wines has shut a facility in Carneros, California, resulting in layoffs at the US vintner.
In a statement, a company spokesperson said it had closed the site, affecting 13 positions.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the impacted location is called Carneros Hill Winery, adding that Jackson Family Wines filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notice (WARN) with authorities in California on 12 February.
The winemaker's Carneros facility "served as overflow production capacity and was not tied to any specific brand", the Jackson Family Wines spokesperson said, adding the site had become "underutilised and we consolidated operations accordingly".
Two weeks ago, Jackson Family Wines appointed former Upfield and Nestlé executive Tim Brown as its new CEO.
Brown takes over the role from Rick Tigner, who is retiring after more than three decades at the family-owned business.
The group's portfolio of wineries includes Benvolio in Italy, Château Lassègue in Bordeaux and Giant Steps in Australia’s Yarra Valley.
The Carneros site closure follows news last week of Californian wine giant Gallo shutting one of its production sites in Napa Valley and filing notices for job cuts across several other California wine operations.
According to a WARN filing with California authorities, Gallo will close the Ranch Winery in St. Helena in April. The closure is expected to affect 56 employees.
In separate WARN filings, the company also outlined job cuts at four other locations. The notices cover 37 roles in total across its Louis M. Martini Winery and Orin Swift Tasting Room in St. Helena, along with its J Vineyards & Winery and Frei Ranch in Healdsburg. The job losses are also set to take effect on 15 April.
That same week, another local wine producer, Trinchero Family Wines and Spirits, also confirmed it had put two of its vineyards in Napa Valley on the market.
The San Francisco Chronicle cited its Haystack Vineyard and Clouds Nest Vineyard.
Haystack has been put up for sale for $5.6m while the Clouds Nest location is going for $4.5m on the luxury real estate website Christie’s International Real Estate, the publication reported.
When approached on the topic by Just Drinks, a Trinchero spokesperson said: “Given market dynamics, listing select vineyards is a proactive step we’ve taken to ensure we’re positioned for long-term, sustainable growth."
Earlier in January, Constellation Brands also confirmed plans to close Mission Bell winery in the US after the end of supply contracts with Gallo.
