Suntory Holdings has joined a water stewardship programme as part of a pledge to improve sustainability.

The Japanese group, which owns a wide portfolio of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, announced today a co-operation with Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS). Suntory is the first Japanese company to partner with AWS, which was established by groups including the World Wildlife Fund to promote water sustainability around the world.

Through the agreement, Suntory will support AWS activities in Japan, including awareness-building campaigns and training programmes.

In a statement, Suntory CEO Tak Niinami praised the new agreement. “To date, only two facilities in Japan are certified by AWS and both belong to Suntory, we look forward to penetrating the important roles of AWS in the country,” Niinami said. “We are fully aligned with the ambition of AWS to achieve a fully water-sustainable world through business leadership and opportunity.”
