US singer Janelle Monae is to feature in a new video for Pernod Ricard’s Martell Cognac brand. ‘The Unexpected Effect’ is directed by filmmaker Ewurakua Dawson-Amoah and features Monae alongside Martell’s Blue Swift bottling - a Cognac-based spirit finished in Kentucky Bourbon casks. The spot is the latest chapter in the Cognac brand’s 'Soar Beyond the Expected' campaign and seeks to promote the impact of Black culture on the US hospitality industry, according to Pernod. As well as Monae, the video also features American bartender, spirits educator and New York hospitality industry veteran Franky Marshall. Coinciding with the campaign, the brand owner has created a limited-edition cocktail kit featuring a Martell Blue Swift recipe created by Marshall alongside a copy of ‘The Ideal Bartender’ by Tom Bullock. The kit is available in limited quantities until the end of March in the US, through online retailer Cocktail Courier. “Janelle Monáe leads with her retro-futuristic flare and unapologetic individuality, and I think we’re alike in that way,” Marshall said. “The drink is an eclectic fusion of my Caribbean heritage and the stylish French influence that Martell brings to the bar. We hope that people enjoy the cocktail at home just as much as I did while creating it.” To mark Black History Month (February) in the US and Women’s History Month (March), Pernod has made a US$200,000 donation to the Restaurant Workers’ Community Foundation. The funds will be used on projects to advance opportunities and education for black, indigenous, and women of colour in the country's restaurant industry. “We’re working towards an inclusive future that provides a level-playing field for all and honours the full range of people and stories that shape our diverse culture,” said Pernod's North America CMO, Pamela Forbus. “This campaign is a testament to the journey we’re on and commitment to mirror the diversity of our society in all we do.” Earlier this month, Pernod launched a worldwide campaign for its Jameson whiskey brand featuring Irish actor, writer and comedian Aisling Bea.
