Former NFL player Troy Aikman has launched a new beer, according to a recent report.

Speaking to US sports business news outlet Front Office Sports (FOS), Aikman confirmed that Eight, described only as a “light beer”, will undergo a soft launch in Texas in the coming months. Additional information on retailer listings and pricing was not immediately available, although Aikman told FOS he would be open to expanding the beer’s presence nationwide.

According to the report, Aikman and his unnamed partners raised the initial funding for the business through friends and family, with “big investors” set to join in the near future.

“I’m not naïve about this … Shoot, there are over 8,000 breweries and here we are diving into probably the most competitive segment, going up against some real titans and heavyweights,” he told FOS.

Aikman won three Super Bowls with the Dallas Cowboys National Football League franchise between 1993 and 1996.
