An Illinois judge has approved a US$12m settlement of a class-action lawsuit alleging that the Nestle-owned Poland Spring bottled water is not as pure as the company claims.

Nestle Waters welcomed the decision saying the ruling in Kane County Circuit Court will allow Poland Spring to get on with its business.

In the settlement, Nestle Waters continues to deny allegations that Poland Spring is not naturally pure, doesn’t come from protected sources deep in the woods, and is not true spring water since it is drawn from wells.

Consumers who brought the action against Nestle get US$8m in discounts and coupons over five years. The ruling also requires the company to make US$2.75m in charitable donations

Bloomberg news said today that the settlement, if upheld, may block 11 similar lawsuits in the US over Poland Spring.
