The annual Beverage Digest/Maxwell US soft drinks rankings have shown that Coca-Cola has increased its market share after three successive years of decline or no growth.

Coca-Cola’s share of the US$62.9m market was up 0.6 percentage points at 44.3%, against 43.7% in 2001. Unit case volumes were up by 2.1%. Coke’s chief rival, PepsiCo, saw its share decline by 0.2% to 31.4%, but its unit case volumes were actually up 0.2%.

The market share of the third largest player in the US soft drinks market, Cadbury Schweppes, fell by 0.6% points to 15%, with both the Dr Pepper and 7Up brands reported to have lost share.

Coca-Cola’s increase was said to have been down to the introduction of Vanilla Coke and strong sales of Diet Coke.
