The US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has said that it has received a petition proposing the expansion of the Russian River Valley viticultural area in Sonoma County, California.

The proposed 767-acre expansion lies on the eastern boundary of the Russian River Valley viticultural area, located entirely within the Sonoma Coast and North Coast viticultural areas of northern California.

The petition was received from Donald L Carano of the Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery in Healdsburg. The proposal would result in less than a 1% increase in the established area’s size. He argues that the proposed expansion has the same climate and characteristics of the current Russian River Valley viticultural area and therefore meets the criteria for expansion.

Carano also says that a number of grape growers in the proposed expansion area had wrongly believed their vineyards to be within the boundaries of the Russian Valley viticultural area anyway.

The ATF is requesting comments concerning this proposal. Written comments must be received by March 10, 2003. Send written comments to any of the following addresses: Chief, Regulations Division, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, P.O.
