Senior representatives from the Scotch Whisky industry and Richard Caborn, Minister for Trade, today agreed that government and industry should work together to improve access for Scotch Whisky to the Indian market. At present, access to the Indian spirits market is all but closed to overseas producers. The Indian Government does not allow imports of bottled Scotch Whisky, unless it is for sale in duty free shops, certain hotels and restaurants. This seriously curtails sales of Scotch, which accounts for just 360,000 cases – 0.6% – of a total spirits market of 63 million cases.
