The UK’s Financial Services Authority has closed its investigation into the scandal over leaked documents from the Belgian brewer Interbew, which it suspected were linked to stock market abuse.

The FSA said it could not take the probe any further. However, regulatory authorities in Belgium are continuing with their own probe.
Interbrew began an investigation back in December 2001, when documents were leaked to the UK press that suggested that the brewer was about to make a bid for South African Breweries.
The documents it turned out had been falsified and Interbrew began criminal proceedings against “persons unknown” for their theft and falsification.
Interbrew went head-to-head against the five UK news organisations that had received the documents demanding they be returned, but the UK companies claimed they had to protect their sources. The case was taken to the House of Lords, before it was finally handed over to the FSA last year.
