Import figures from the UK’s HM Customs & Excise suggest that France is continuing to cling on to its position in the UK wine market, in terms of volume at least.

The country remains the number one importer of wine into the UK in volume terms with 26% of the market, compared to the number two Australia, which holds 19%. France imported 1,147855hl of wine for the first six-months of 2002.

And, though France’s leading position in value has fallen to Australia, the country still registered an 11% increase from January to June 2002 to £307m.

France still dominates the on-trade with a 43% hold in volumes and has 22.2% of sales in the off-trade, also a leading share.

In a statement, the French promotional body Sopexa said: “There is a strong belief within the French wine industry that strong promotional support for the work being done is essential, and France is committed  to continued investment to change consumer perceptions of French wines and restore confidence in the offer aiming members of the UK trade.”
