Hooghoudt plans to retain the Smidt trademark. The Smidt product range includes the Drentse herbal spirit and a cranberry-flavoured gin. The company said it would begin transferring Smidt’s equipment to its plant in Groningen from June 27. Smidt has been in existence for 190 years and was the last independent distillery in the northern region of Drentse.
THE NETHERLANDS: Hooghoudt to acquire Smidt
The Groningen-based spirits producer, Hooghoudt, is to acquire its competitor, Smidt, which is based in Assen, also in the northern Netherlands. No financial details of the deal were disclosed.
