The tax on beer, cider and wine has gone up by 8%, while the tax on spirits and sparkling wines has been increased by 10%. South African Breweries (SAB) expressed satisfaction with the budget in general but said that the increase on beer excise was “very disappointing.” The excise is actually lower on wine than on beer and SAB believes that more emphasis should have been placed on evening things up.

The South African government has increased the tax on beer, wines and spirits as part of its budget announced on Wednesday. The rises will be imposed with immediate effect.
