US winery Plata Wine Partners’ current president and CEO Scott Smith has announced plans to retire from the business.

Smith will retire in December, having joined the company in 2019. Just Drinks has asked Plata to confirm when it expects to hire a new CEO.

Jason Strobbe has been named the group’s new president.

He previously held leadership positions at Vintage Wine Estates and Truett Hurst as well as Shearer’s Snacks and SaraLee, among others.

California-based Plata Wine Partners said in a statement: “Strobbe will work closely with Smith over the coming months, fully integrating with the team, upholding the company’s commitment to quality and innovation, ensuring that Plata’s vision remains clear, and goals are met”.

The vintner and bulk wine service provider was founded in 2005 by Dennis Stroud in Napa Valley. The company owns and manages over 18,000 acres of vineyards, marketing wine under brands including The Abrupt Vineyards and The Buccaneer.

Plata’s portfolio offers Californian wines from Napa Valley, Alexander Valley, Russian River, Sonoma Coast, Carneros, Monterey, Paso Robles, and Santa Barbara.

“I’m incredibly excited and honoured to have the opportunity to join the Plata team,” said Strobbe.

“Plata is known for its strong culture and decades of successes. I look forward to building on this strong foundation as we look to the future of the company and our ever-evolving industry.”

Speaking on Strobbe’s appointment, Smith said: “His deep industry knowledge and proven leadership skills make him the ideal choice to guide Plata Wine Partners into its next chapter of growth while maintaining our commitment to sustainability and quality.”

In January, Plata Wine Partners snapped up a clutch of wine brands from wine and spirts group Purple Brands.

Privately-owned Purple Brands, founded in 2001 by Derek Benham, sold a portfolio of “exclusive retail wine brands” including Donovan Park, Main & Geary and Shiloh Road.
