Champagne house Piper-Heidsieck has released the first in a new series of special-issue cuvees.

Hors-Série 1971 is a 50-year-old blend of Champagne that was disgorged in February this year. The dosage is 10g from a 2019 Chardonnay, with no malolactic fermentation, as was the tradition in 1971.

Hors-Série 1971 is a “reinterpretation” of a vintage blend dating from 50 years ago, according to Piper Heidsieck, and was created by chief winemaker Émilien Boutillat.

French investment group Européenne de Participations Industrielles bought the Piper-Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck Champagne brands from Remy Cointreau just over a decade ago. In January, EPI set up a “strategic board” to oversee decisions for its wine operations, which include Piper-Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck.
