Carlsberg has taken control of Gorkha Brewery in Nepal, the brewer has confirmed.
Carlsberg has increased its stake in Gorkha Brewery from 50% to 90%, a Denmark-based spokesperson for the brewer confirmed to just-drinks today (12 November). Gorkha was established in 1990 as a joint venture between Carlsberg and Khetan Group.
“Gorkha Brewery is by far the leading beer producer in the Nepal market,” said the Carlsberg spokesperson. “Carlsberg has gradually expanded its ownership of Gorkha since 1995,” he said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Carlsberg sees Asia as its major growth market and has said several times in the past 18 months that it will seek to expand its business there. Asia remains a small part of Carlsbserg’s business, accounting for 13% of volume sales in 2009.
