PepsiCo will report its third-quarter results on Wednesday (17 October). Here, just-drinks takes a look at the highs and lows for the company in the three months to the end of September.
- In Q1, PepsiCo announced a JV with Chinese noodles and soft drinks maker Tingyi Holding Corp. In July, the companies unveiled their first collaboration – a bottling plant in central China due to open later this year. The Henan province facility will manufacture soft drinks and bottled water
- PepsiCo, which makes energy drink AMP, was hit with a subpoena by New York’s attorney general in July requesting information on the marketing of its energy drink brands, according to reports. However, an analyst said the move was unlikely to affect sales.
- The Coca-Cola Co may have had the Olympics but PepsiCo had its own sponsorship deal with a summer blockbuster. Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises is the second-biggest box-office hit of the year so far and PepsiCo made the most of it with a heavy advertising push. The company also tied up a deal to sponsor the Super Bowl half-time show next year.
- In August, PepsiCo followed Coca-Cola in announcing a return to Myanmar after a 15-year absence. Under a new deal, Pepsi-Cola, 7-Up and Mirinda will roll out in “parts of the country”.
- At the start of September, Britvic, in which PepsiCo has a 5% stake, announced it was in merger talks with fellow UK soft drinks maker AG Barr. Analysts said the move suggested Britvic had received permission from PepsiCo to merge, though the company’s lips remained sealed on what it thought.
- On 11 September, PepsiCo president John Compton announced he was leaving after less than eight months in the role. His departure sparked fresh talk over who will succeed CEO Indra Nooyi, with analysts noting the company has a “deep bench”.
