The UK Food Standards Agency has called for action on added sugar in soft drinks. Here, just-drinks summarises the main points.
- Full sugar soft drinks should be made available in 250ml pack sizes.
- Sport and energy drinks are excluded from the recommendations, for now.
- All other drinks with total sugar of at least 8g per 100ml should reduce sugar levels by 4% by end of 2012.
- Any drinks launched with total sugar of at least 8g per 100ml should have 4% less sugar than the nearest equivalent product as of 2008.
- Recommendations are “voluntary”, not mandatory.
- Only added sugar counts, not natural sugar found in many juices.
