A court order instructing Coca-Cola to stop using local groundwater at its bottling factory in southern India was issued yesterday, accordin gto local reports. Judge K. Balakrishnan Nair of the High Court in Kerala state gave Coca-Cola officials one month to stop using groundwater at the plant in Plachimada village.

The factory has been given one month’s grace to locate water from other sources. The Perumatty village council, which controls several villages including Plachimada, had alleged that the factory draws 1.5m litres of water a day through dozens of bore wells. It is not yet clear where Coca-Cola will get the water from.
Coke “respects the court order,” H.K.K. Warrier, a manager at the plant, told The Associated Press. “We will study the court order and take appropriate decisions in the next one month.”
“We are happy that we have fought a legal battle against a multinational company and won it,” Perumatty village council secretary K. N. Unnikrishnan told The Associated Press.
