Shipments of Cognac rose strongly in the first three months of this year, according to figures released this week.

Trade body the Bureau National Interprofessionnel Cognac (BNIC) said this week that Cognac volumes were up by 25.6% on the corresponding quarter last year to 85,550 hectolitres, the equivalent of 30.5m bottles. In vale terms, shipments totalled just over EUR354.7m (US$469.6m), an increase of 28.7%.

A spokesman for the BNIC told just-drinks that, while the double-digit increases reflected strong signs of market recovery, the first quarter of 2009 had been a very weak period for the trade.

Exports to Cognac’s main market, the US, rose by 15.6% to 30,227 hectolitres while shipments to China soared by 65% to 8,533 hectolitres. China is now the second biggest market for Cognac, when shipments which transit via Singapore are taken into account.
