Weaker Cognac sales caused French spirits exports to fall significantly in 2009, according to trade body Fédération des Exportateurs de Vins et Spiritueux (FEVS).

Spirits exports decreased 12% in value to EUR2.25bn (US$3bn) and 8.6% in volume to 45.4m cases, FEVS said, blaming the economic downturn for the fall.

Cognac exports dropped 15.6% in value and 14% in volume, despite a recovery in the final quarter.

Last week, it emerged that French wine exports have fallen back to year 2000 levels.

Commenting on both wine and spirits, FEVS president Claude de Jouvencel said that the year had “ended much better than it had started with November and December being good months.”

However, he said that the outlook remains uncertain for 2010 and a lasting recovery is probably still some way off.
