Global exports of Burgundy wines rose in double digits in both volume and value last year, according to trade body, the Bureau Interprofessionnel des Vins du Bourgogne (BIVB).
Exports reached 89m bottles in calendar 2010, an increase of 13.5% on 2009. The value of exports rose by 16% to EUR576m (US$796m).
However, the results were inferior to those recorded in 2008 and were down 4.3% and 9.7% on 2008 volume and value exports respectively. The BIVB said 2010 figures reflect a “significant recovery” in exports to the UK and to North America.
Apart from the UK, Burgundy’s main export markets in Europe showed “stability”, it said. But, there was a “marked upturn” in shipments to Asia and Oceania.
The BIVB also highlighted strong growth for Burgundy whites, as well as higher prices for reds.
