Wine magnate Bernard Magrez is believed to have made a six-figure offer for the prestigious Bordeaux estate, Chateau Beychevelle.
The company declined to comment on any prospective deal, which is reckoned to have been tabled at the start of this week.
Sources close to the situation told just-drinks that Magrez is always on the lookout for new acquisitions and has the necessary financial muscle to spend big.
“He can put a lot of money on the table tomorrow if he needs to,” said a source. “If he needs EUR100m (US$135m) he can have it. His goal is definitely to have a new Grand Cru in the Médoc.”
Beychevelle is a fourth-growth estate at the south-eastern tip of St Julien, and would certainly be a prestigious addition to Magrez’s wine empire, which already boasts a number of estates in the New World, lesser Bordeaux chateaux and the Graves cru classé Pape-Clement.
