Fiji Water has reportedly said that it will close operations in Fiji, the location of its only production plant and water source, due to a Government tax hike.
The company said late last week that it will cease to operate in the country after the Government announced that it would raise tax on bottled water production to FJD0.15 (US$0.08) per litre from just FJD0.003 currently. The group said that Fiji is “increasingly unstable” and a “very risky place in which to invest”, according to reports.
It is unclear how the company intends to survive. Fiji Water has only one plant, in Fiji, but has risen to become one of the most popular premium bottled water brands in the US.
