Diageo is preparing for the re-opening of its Brora Scotch whisky distillery this year with a three-strong collection of ultra-high-end single malt expressions.

The GBP30,000 (US$41,600) ‘Brora Triptych’, announced today, will be available from next month. The pack, limited to 300 units in total, coincides with the recommencement of operations at the Brora facility in north-east Scotland, 38 years after the distillery closed.

Available in 50cl bottles, the set comprises:

  • Brora Elusive Legacy – 48 years old (1972), 42.8% abv
  • Brora Age of Peat – 43 years old (1977), 48.6%
  • Brora Timeless Original – 38 years old, (1982), 47.5%

The three crystal bottles, available to buy online and from selected retailers globally, are housed in a wooden box made of ash.

“My father was an ‘old hand’ at the distillery,” said Brora master distiller Stewart Bowman. “In the years after Brora’s closure, I remember my father showing me the old cask ledgers and the records of those final casks distilled in 1983 and asking if Brora would return one day.

“It fills me with great pride that 38 years after the doors of Brora closed, more casks will now be filled … . In the Brora Triptych, we aimed to celebrate the great whisky styles of the past for which Brora is known.”

News of Brora’s re-opening, along with fellow “lost” distillery Port Ellen on Islay, broke in late-2017, when Diageo confirmed a GBP35m (then-US$46m) spend on bringing the pair back into operation.
