Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits has invested in Two Sons Imports’ Cantera Negra Tequila brand.

Under the terms of the deal, the US wine-and-spirits group has bought a “partial ownership stake” in Cantera Negra Tequila. Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits will also work on the brand’s sales and marketing. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Describing Cantera Negra as “a novel addition to the portfolio”, Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits CEO Peter Deutsch said the agreement with Two Sons Imports had been “the culmination of a four-year search”.

“Cantera Negra represents a critical addition to our five-year strategy to help us scale our luxury spirits business by providing consumers with an exceptional quality Tequila option to choose instead of more mass-produced offerings,” he said.

Canter Negra joins Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits’ growing spirits roster, which also includes Redemption whiskey, Bib & Tucker Bourbon, Masterson’s Rye, Luksusowa vodka and Gray Whale gin.

The company, which was founded in 1981 by chairman Bill Deutsch to market wines from the major producing regions of the world, expanded into spirits in 2009.

Two Sons Imports chairman Lance Gildner added: “When we first acquired the Cantera Negra brand, we knew that we would one day need to partner with a much larger company for the brand to reach its full potential.

“We are thrilled with our partnership with Bill and Peter Deutsch. They are among the most professional and transparent partners we’ve met, and Deutsch Family is one of the fastest-growing wine and spirits companies in the US.”

Two Sons Imports was founded in 2015 and Cantera Negra Tequila is the company’s only spirits proposition. It acquired the rights to the brand from the Becherano family, and in 2019 expanded the Cantera Negra roster to include Cantera Negra Café and Viva Agave extensions.

Cantera Negra Tequila is made from 100% blue agave and its portfolio also includes Reposado, Añejo and Extra Añejo variants. The recommended prices for the Tequilas range from US$34.99 to $119.99 per bottle.

The brand was recently launched in the US. Some 20,000 cases of its Tequila were shipped to the country in the 12 months to the end of September, according to data provided by Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits.
