Less than a week after the Canadian Government added Bisphenol A (BPA) to its national list of toxic substances, it has proposed new regulations that would control the chemical’s use in plastic drinks packaging.
Canada’s environment minister, Jim Prentice, said the rules would particularly address environmental concerns about the plastic additive. “The proposed rules will require facilities to develop and implement plans to limit releases of BPA to the environment and to submit ongoing progress reports to the Government of Canada,” Prentice said.
The proposal has kicked off a 60-day public consultation period, after which the Canadian Government could proceed with drafting legislation. BPA is already banned from plastic baby bottles sold in Canada.
