Bulgaria is to ban the sale of alcohol in plastic bottles over 1 litre in size from 2004, the country’s press reported today.

The Bulgarian parliamentary budget committee has also decided to introduce requirements for the packaging under 1 litre, including stipulations that there must be no O-shaped ring around the bottle’s neck, so that it will not hamper the placement of excise duty stickers on the bottles.

Originally the committee had looked at banning sales in bottles over 200ml, but protests from producers saw the measure toned down.
