Wine production in Austria reached 2,530,600 hls in 2001, some 8% higher than the long-term average production, according to figures released by the Austrian Statistics Office.
White wine volumes reached 1,795,200 hls, 6% above average, while red wine volumes were 14% above average at 771,400 hls. Production of higher quality wines rose by 2% to 2,027,400 hls while volumes of table wine almost doubled to 307,000 hls. The largest Austrian wine region is Lower Austria which accounted for 61% of the production last year. Burgenland is the next largest region with 31% of the total, followed by Styria with 7% and Vienna with 1%.
