Stephan Millar, the Australian boss of the world’s largest wine company Constellation Wines, has called the last 12 months “the toughest since I’ve been in the wine industry.”

The Australian Financial Review reported the former managing director of BRL Hardy as saying that price competition continued to be savage in most of the key consumer markets around the world.

Millar was made head of Constellation Wines when its parent Constellation Brands bought BRL Hardy earlier this year. He was managing director of BRL Hardy when it first listed in 1992.

Millar said that Constellation’s distribution network had helped the business weather the storm.

“Without the Constellation deal the job would have been much tougher, without those routes to market,” Millar said.
