ABARE said that, having already protected name of geographical origin like “Champagne”, the European Commission is trying to apply similar protection for such expressions as “superior”, “vintage” and “reserve”. It said that moves to have imported wines labeled as being produced with non-European methods might stigmatise them in the eyes of consumers.
