Asahi Group has appointed a PepsiCo executive to head up Australian beer unit Carlton & United Breweries.
Danny Celoni, who is CEO of PepsiCo’s Australia, New Zealand & South Pacific division, will take over the new role in February. Celoni, pictured right, replaces Peter Filipovic, who announced in July he will step down after nearly 25 years with CUB.
Asahi purchased Victoria Bitter-owner CUB from Anheuser-Busch InBev in June last year. The brewing giant offloaded the unit, which it inherited through 2016’s SABMiller takeover, to help pay down debt. Alongside VB, CUB owns the Fosters and Carlton brands, and the unit has retained the commercial rights from A-B InBev for Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona beers in Australia.
Asahi Beverages Oceania CEO Robert Iervasi said Celoni has a “formidable reputation” in Australia and Asia and has worked closely with Asahi during his time at PepsiCo.
“We’ve observed first-hand his ability to understand and deliver great results for his customers, and build exceptional teams,” Iervasi added.
Celoni spent 17 years with Johnnie Walker-owner Diageo, where he rose to commercial director for Australia, NZ & South Pacific. He left Diageo in April 2013 and has been with PepsiCo for five years.
