Included in the latest issue of Mintel’s Global New Products Database is a chilli-flavoured cola drink recently launched in Singapore and a dessert drink launched in Austria under the Dolce Vita brand by the dairy company, Nöm.
Chilli cola
Chilli, as a flavour, has not only appeared in the chocolate confectionery category of late (see Magnum Praline with chilli) but also flavoured with chilli is a new cola drink in Singapore from the Australian company, Margaret River Beverages. An extra Mexican feel has also been given with an additional lime flavour. The new drink is said to create “a flavour that salsa’s across the tongue”. It is imported and distributed in Singapore by Interstates Market.
Starbucks Coffee
Starbucks Coffee is known for its originality and its tendency to stray away from ordinary coffee options. The latest variety that was welcomed by Canadian consumers is no exception; Komodo Dragon is a unique blend of coffee from Indonesia. The pack claims that it evokes the lushness of the Indonesian islands through its mellow smoothness, earthy richness, and surprising crispness. Find it on shelf in supermarkets throughout Canada.
Drink positioned dessert
Dairy company, Nöm, is trying to make desserts easier to consume by positioning them as a drink. New in Austria from the company under its Dolce Vita brand is Dessert Drink. It comprises a bottled vanilla flavoured milk “dessert”. The packaging makes it look very similar to a yogurt drink, but the ingredients suggest more of a similarity to flavoured milk. The product is also positioned as being ideal as a dessert sauce.
Little bottles pack a big punch
There have always been juice boxes and pouches targeted towards children’s lunchboxes, and now adults can share in the taste sensation without all the wacky graphics. Ocean Spray has diverted its attention from its usual “adult-type” flavours with those cranberry or grapefruit cocktails, and introduced Fruit Punch Juice Drinks that are now packaged in a To-Go six pack. Each 8-fl.oz bottle is just the right size for any child from five to fifty-five. The thing is, not only does the new To-Go package offer travel convenience, but also it still keeps 100% of the daily value of vitamin C in each serving.

By GlobalDataFrom the USA (Texas), comes another novel use for a stand-up pouch. The laminate pouch, probably in polyester and polyethylene, holds 340g of powder to create the perfect Lt. Blender’s brand margarita. According to instructions printed on the back of the pack, the consumer adds tequila, triple sec and water to the pouch, to make nearly two litres of product. The pouch is then placed in the refrigerator to freeze until a “slush” is formed, when it can be poured out of the pack and served – it is fitted with a tamper-evident screw thread cap. Graphics are printed gravure, with a see-through area and fill lines marked to facilitate preparation.
