A meeting of the Global Electronic DataInterchange (GEDI) Standards Maintenance Committee (SMC) took place in July 1997, inChicago. It was attended by Robert Buchanan of United Distillers, who is the Chairpersonof the International Commerce Working Group of the Alcohol Beverage Industry (ABI) EDIGroup; and by Susan Hilaski, ABI EDI Group Co-ordinator. The committee’s aim is toincorporate ABI’s business requirements with the GEDI Guidelines Book. Severalinternational messages were reviewed, and were successfully incorporated into the book.

In February 1998, several ABI EC Groupmembers met with the GEDI SMC of the Uniform Code Council (UCC). This group includedrepresentatives from: Brown-Forman Beverages Worldwide; Certified Grocers of California,Ltd.; Frito-Lay; Hudson’s Bay Company; Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc.; NIKE;Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board; and Southern Wine & Spirits of America, Inc.

The meeting discussed how the GEDI SMCoperates and its relationship with the international standards development community. ABImembers also received a crash course on the approval process of Data Maintenance Requestswithin international standing bodies.

The ABI EC Group’s Executive Committeedetermined their role with the GEDI SMC in June 1998. ABI’s Task Alignment Grouprecommended the merger of all ABI’s international messages into the GEDI GuidelinesBook. When approved, an ABI International Task Group will be formed. This group will:

  • develop industry business models;
  • incorporate ABI business requirements within the GEDI Guidelines Book; and
  • participate on the GEDI SMC.

The next GEDI Guidelines Book is scheduledfor publication in autumn 1998.
