Natural Mineral, Spring and BottledWaters – Proposal

Leatherhead Food RA has received a letterfrom the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and Department of Health Joint FoodSafety and Standards Group (JFSSG) concerning the draft Natural Mineral Water, SpringWater and Bottled Drinking Water Regulations.

The proposed Regulations are still beingfinalised and their implementation date will now be later than previously anticipated. TheJFSSG will provide further information when a definitive date for the implementation ofthe new legislation is known.

Sweeteners – Amendment

The Sweeteners in Food (Amendment)Regulations 1999 have been published and enter into force on 22 April 1999. TheRegulations further amend the Sweeteners in Food Regulations 1995, to update a referenceto Directive 95/31/EC on specific purity criteria for sweeteners to include its amendmentby Directive 98/66/EC, which altered the specification for isomalt. Furthermore, theRegulations also bring up to date references to the 1995 Regulations in various other UKRegulations.

The Food RA has received a copy of thefollowing standard on soft drinks published by the Bolivian Institute for Standardisationand Quality (IBNORCA):

Requirements for carbonated drinks (NB 38380); Requirements for natural mineral potable water (NB 660 950); Requirements for bottlepurified water (NB 661 950); Requirements for natural mineral water (NB 651 95);Requirements for potable water definitions and terminology (NB 495 85); Requirements forpotable water (NB 512 97).


BRAZIL

Soft Drinks

Order No. 316 of 8 April 1999 has beenpublished, which lays down a MERCOSUR-based draft technical regulation on additives andtheir maximum levels permitted in carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks.


EGYPT

Colours

The Leatherhead Food RA has received a copyof Decree No. 411/1997 on the use of colours.


EC

Coffee and Chicory Extracts

Directive 1999/4/EC of 22 February 1999relating to coffee and chicory extracts has been published. This Directive repealsDirective 77/436/EEC from 13 September 2000. Member States must permit the marketing ofcomplying products by 13 September 2000 and prohibit the marketing of non-complyingproducts from 13 September 2001; however, non-complying products labelled inaccordance with Directive 77/436/EEC before 13 September 2001 may be marketed until stocksare exhausted.

Flavourings Register

Commission Decision 1999/217/EC of 23February 1999 has been published adopting a register of flavouring substances used in oron foodstuffs drawn up in application of Regulation (EC) No. 2232/92. This register hasbeen divided into three major parts and lists the flavourings notified to the Commissionby the Member States and from certain EFTA countries. It is to be adopted within one yearof its notification to the Commission.
