Impact’s Global Alcoholic Beverage DrinksStudy Forecasts 21 Million-Liter Consumption Gain by 2005

Despite the economic upheaval in keymarkets, over the medium- to long-term beer, wine and spirits are expected to expand involume. Looking beyond present economic difficulties, many emerging markets in Asia,Eastern Europe and Latin America are projected to grow significantly over the course ofthe next seven years, prompting overall growth for all alcoholic beverage categories.

Impact Databank projects that by 2000, beerconsumption will stand at 133.9 billion liters, wine at 22.27 billion liters and distilledspirits at 18.33 billion liters, all growing from 1998 levels. By 2005, beer is expectedto reach 148.1 billion liters, wine 22.59 billion liters and spirits 18.44 billion liters.

Beer is expected to be the main driver forgrowth, with an average annual compound growth rate of 2.0% expected between 2000 and2005. Such a result would take beer’s share of the total global alcoholic beverage marketto almost 78%, from about 75% in 1998. Beer’s share has grown steadily over the pastseveral years.

Both wine and spirits are likely to showfar more modest growth and see their share of the total world market eroded by the strongadvancement of beer. Impact Databank projects that wine consumption will grow by anaverage annual compound growth rate of 0.3% in 2000-2005, garnering 11.8% of the globaldrinks market, from 13% in 1998. The projected average annual compound growth rate forspirits is 0.1% between 2000 and 2005. Distilled spirits are expected to hold 9.7% of theglobal market in 2005, dropping from 10.6% in 1998.

Consumption of beer is expected to expandto 23 liters per-capita globally by 2005, while wine is likely to decline to 3.5 litersand spirits to 2.9 liters.
