This week, Anheuser-Busch InBev is holding a host of analyst presentations in Johannesburg, South Africa. Here’s a low-down on the company’s footprint in the country and in Africa, as well as its future expectations for the continent.

Africa

  • Africa’s population stands at about 1.2bn. About 100m middle-class Africans live in urban areas, a number that is growing fast
  • In the coming years, Africa will represent 50% of the world’s population growth
  • The continent’s 18-to-24 age group will grow by 29% in the next ten years
  • In ten years’ time, A-B InBev expects 47% of the African population to be living in urbanised areas
  • The brewer says that in the next decade, the weight of the Africa Zone on its total sales will increase by four percentage points “in a purely organic way”. Africa will represent at least 20% of A-B InBev’s total volume growth
  • Consumption across Africa is still dominated by informal alcohol. “Many of our consumers have to work hours to earn enough money to buy a beer, compared to minutes” in developed countries, according to A-B InBev Africa head Ricardo Tadeau
