Halewood Artisanal Spirits has announced the inaugural release from its pilot distillery in Scotland under the John Crabbie & Co brand name.

Chair Pier Single Malt was produced at the micro-distillery of the same name in Edinburgh, and the first single malt Scotch whisky to be made in the city in almost 100 years. Only 234 bottles have been produced.

A cask-strength expression, Chain Pier has been matured for three years in virgin oak barrels. A total of 39 casks were filled, using spirit from the now-mothballed distillery’s 500-litre copper pot still. The Chain Pier facility had been set up by Halewood as an experimental facility whilst a larger site for Crabbie – also in Edinburgh – was still under construction.

“The Chain Pier distillery was operational for just a year… yet it gave our team a great opportunity to continue John Crabbie’s legacy of innovation – handcrafting unique distillations and trialling everything from malt types to custom casks,” said Halewood marketing director James Stocker. “The launch of the Chain Pier Single Malt is an incredibly exciting step in the John Crabbie & Co journey, as the malt whisky that we have crafted from start to finish at a site of our own… .”

Last year, Halewood sourced a cask of 28-year-old single malt for a limited Crabbie release. The 1992 Speyside single malt had been produced at an unspecified distillery in Scotland’s Glenlivet valley.
