Sales of bottled Chilean wine rose 5.6% in the first half of 2003 on the back of particularly strong sales to Germany and Denmark, which counterbalanced falling sales in the UK and US.


Bottled wine exports in the first six months were worth US$296.1m. Exports by volume totalled 179m litres, an 8.5% rise on the same period of 2002.


Exports to Germany grew an impressive 52% to US$19.4m, while sales to Denmark rose 27% to US$18.4m. But sales were disappointed in Chilean wine’s two biggest export markets, the UK and US, which saw sales fall 4% and 7% respectively.


Concha y Toro, which is owned by the Guilisasti family, saw sales grow 20% to $65.3 million in the first half, and remains Chile’s most important wine exporter. Other wineries performing strongly in the first half were Santa Helena (up 45%), Los Vascos (up 35%) and Montes (up 27%). But falling sales were reported by San Pedro (down 12.5%), Santa Carolina (down 15.6%) and Santa Emiliana (down 13.4%).
