The Welsh Whisky Co has introduced amendments to a recently-launched advertising campaign for its Penderyn brand that used the Welsh Government's dragon symbol instead of its own logo. The Penderyn Distillery described the use of the symbol, which is trademarked by the Welsh Government's tourism organisation Visit Wales, as “an honest mistake” and said it would amend campaign assets after being notified of the error. The activation, which launched last month, had been designed to promote Penderyn’s spirits in growing Oceanic and Asian markets. "Everything possible is being done to change out all of the advertising materials prior to us moving from New Zealand and now into Australia and Asia, starting with mainland China and Taiwan," a company spokesperson told Just Drinks today. The Visit Wales logo (left) and the Penderyn version (right) Penderyn’s own dragon logo – which was not used on the campaign assets - is similar, but not identical to, Visit Wales’ iteration. A Visit Wales spokeswoman said: “Penderyn is one of many great Welsh food and drink products that we produce in Wales. The specific logo used in this case was part of the registered trademark of the Cymru Wales brand – we would of course not restrict use of the Welsh dragon generally.” Penderyn Distillery was launched by The Welsh Whisky Co in 2000. The distillery is one of only four in Wales currently producing whisky, alongside Halewood Artisanal Spirits’ Aber Falls, Welsh Wind and Da Mhile. Its products are distributed within the UK on-premise by Halewood. Why e-commerce is a channel brand owners must target - and fast - Click here for a Just Drinks focus
