El Clásico is a Nordic rye whisky matured in American virgin oak barrels for three years followed by one year in Spanish vermouth barrels. Stauning said the release, announced today, is the first rye whisky to be aged in vermouth casks.

El Clásico is the third release in Stauning’s research series, created in the company’s distillery in Jutland. Stauning became part of Diageo’s independently-owned Distill Ventures in 2015.

Diageo’s tie-up with Distill Ventures bore fruit in early-2018 when the drinks multinational acquired full ownership of German vermouth brand Belsazar. The Berlin-based brand joined the Distill Ventures portfolio in 2014.
