Two sisters have set up their own Mezcal brand, with the cheapest of the two debut expressions retailing in the US for US$200 per bottle.
Rosalinda and Elizabeth Mendoza have launched Mocel this month. Available online to US consumers, the brand comprises a pair of iterations, both of which are produced using 100% agave and will be available in limited – albeit unspecified – quantities.
Mocel Cupreata 2020 Expression carries an SRP of $199.99, while Ensamble, also distilled in 2020, is priced at $235. The portfolio, which is packaged in ceramic bottles, is produced by a cooperative distillery in the Michoacán region of Mexico.
“Today, who is drinking and how they are drinking are changing,” said Elizabeth Mendoza. “Consumers seek connection with the products they consume. We want to forge a mezcal culture in the US that honours our history.”
In figures released last month, the combined Tequila & mezcal segment boasted the second-fastest rate of spirits’ volume growth in the US last year. The pair were beaten only by pre-mixed cocktails, according to The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States.
