Mark Anthony Group’s Canadian whisky brand, Bearface, has launched Matsutake Release 01, the first in its ‘Wilderness Series’ line.
The new expression comprises single grain whisky of a non-specified age that has been infused with Matsutake mushrooms grown wild in British Columbia. Once distilled, the whisky is matured in ex-Sherry casks that are stored in former shipping containers for what the company refers to as Bearface’s “‘Elemental Ageing’ process”.
“In recent years, many of the world’s most acclaimed mixologists have been embracing the potential of umami-rich fungi as an inventive cocktail ingredient,” said Bearface’s “sommelier forager”, Bram Bolwijn.
Last year, Mark Anthony debuted Bearface’s Triple Oak expression, along with gin brand Glendalough, in Australia via an arrangement with distributor Vanguard Luxury Brands. The company also owns the White Claw hard seltzer market leader in the US.
