According to data released by the Italian national statistics agency, ISTAT, wine production in Italy fell by 14.8% in 2002 to 42.4m hectolitres. White wines accounted for 21.1m hls, while red and rose wine production reached 21.3m hls.

The Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Puglia and Sicily accounted for 53.8% of total production, ISTAT reported, though production in the Veneto was down by 21%.
