Exports of Austrian wines have risen by 10% in value in the first half of 2010, reflecting consumer thirst for higher price bottles in key markets, new figures show.
The 10% rise in wine exports by value outshone a 3% drop in export volumes for the six months to the end of June, the Austrian Wine Marketing Board said today (20 September). Total exports of 32.7m litres for the period were valued at EUR62.5m (US$81.5m).
Average price per litre rose to a record EUR1.91, from EUR1.68 in the first half of 2009. “This brings us even closer to the goal we had set in 2007 – to reach an average export price of EUR2 per litre,” said Willi Klinger, general manager of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board.
Exports to neighbouring Germany, already Austria’s top export market, rose by 10% in value and 2% in volume. Demand also rebounded in the UK and US and continued to grow in the Netherlands and Scandinavia.
