Anheuser-Busch InBev will report its fourth-quarter and full-year results on Thursday. Here, just-drinks takes a look at the company’s activities in its Q4 period, the three months to the end of December:
- The quarter started with A-B InBev preparing the closure of yet another brewery in Russia. The Angarsk brewery in East Siberia is the fourth facility to be shuttered by the company in the last two years. A-B InBev’s unit in the country described Russia’s regulatory regime as “one of the toughtest in the world”
- Anheuser-Busch, the company’s US unit said in late-November that it has started legal proceedings in Kentucky, in the hope that the state will grant it a distributor licence in the city of Owensboro. The absence of such a licence has been holding up A-B’s purchase of Hand Family Cos, a Tennessee-based beer distributor, which also operates in Kentucky
- In early-November, the company confirmed its most recent foray into the craft beer segment in the US. Oregon’s 10 Barrel Brewing Co joins Goose Island and Blue Point in A-B InBev’s craft portfolio
- Following the release of its third-quarter and year-to-date results in early-November, analysts at Bernstein Research described the performance as “a stumble, but not a fall”
- Tax authorities in the brewer’s native home of Belgium said in mid-November that they are to conduct an investigation into one of A-B InBev’s subsidiaries in the country
- The conclusion of a “detailed business review” in November led to the announcement that there would be a spate of redundancies in the brewer’s US operations. Specific numbers were not released, although sources suggested that “hundreds” of jobs could be cut
- In late-November, I proferred the opinion that Budweiser has a struggle on its hands going forward, because younger consumers consider the brand to be old and dusty – a perception that is only boosted by some of the company’s more folksy marketing of the brand
- The latest round in the century-long legal battle over the Budweiser trademark saw Budejovicky Budvar defeat A-B InBev’s appeal over the Budweiser Budvar mark in Norway
- As the end of the year approached, Constellation Brands confirmed the closure of A-B InBev’s glass production plant in Mexico, a move that has cost Constellation $300m
