On Thursday (28 July), Diageo will report its full-year results. Here, just-drinks takes a look at how the group has fared in its fourth quarter, the three months to the end of June:
- At the start of April, Diageo said it would rename Indian whiskey McDowell’s in export markets after pressure from the Scotch Whisky Association.
- Later in the month, the company said it was on the hunt for a new chairman as Franz Humer prepared to step down after eight years in the role. Diageo later appointed former Bacardi CEO Javier Ferran.
- The company also said it was to launch three new flavours under its successful Pimm’s Cider Cup brand in the UK.
- In May, group CEO Ivan Menezes warned against the UK leaving the European Union, saying it could jeopardise the alcohol industry’s global bargaining clout.
- The company also said goodbye to its Africa & Asia-Pacific president, Nick Blazquez, who left the company after 27 years.
- Also in May, Diageo’s Latin America & Caribbean unit said it expects sales to be softer in the second half of the year because of a Don Julio Tequila accounting error.
- Towards the end of the month, the company said it would not contest an expected KRW1.2bn (US$1m) fine from South Korean authorities over payments to on-trade venues.
- Meanwhile, it unveiled its first European Johnnie Walker House.
- In June, Diageo moved its Smirnoff brand into the cider category with Smirnoff Cider, a blend of carbonated cider, fruit flavours and Smirnoff vodka.
