Heineken UK is a beer, cider and pub company and the UK branch of the international brewer. The company is a Category Award Winner for Social – Financial Support in the 2023 Just Drinks Excellence Awards as it launched financial support to help the UK pub trade make sustainable changes to its venues.

Recent legislation changes require hospitality venues in England and Wales to have an EPC (energy performance certificate) rating of C by April 2027, and B by April 2030. Non-compliance could lead to a fine of up to £150,000, a huge risk for pubs and bars, especially following tough economic challenges from rising energy and utility costs, staff shortages and reduced consumer spend.

HEINEKEN UK is recognised in our Social – Financial Support category for the announcement of a £3m fund for qualifying pubs and bars to help them make improvements ahead of these upcoming changes.

Working in partnership with an independent energy consultancy, Compliance365, the sustainability support scheme will cover the cost of qualifying venues’ initial EPC Audit which pinpoints areas of high energy usage and identifies no and low-cost changes to improve energy efficiencies and help operators make savings.  Changes will also be implemented with minimal disruption to the running of the venue.  In addition, the fund will provide up to £5,000 per site towards the cost of any improvements needed.

Compliance365 has now been added to the company’s ‘eazle Club’ which can be found on HEINEKEN’s new global online platform – eazle. Launched earlier this year as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to supporting a thriving on-trade and offering value to customers in all aspects of running a pub, eazle is designed to make it easier for publicans to run and grow their business by harnessing HEINEKEN’s global scale straight to its customers.

Eazle Club offers existing and prospective customers access to exclusive, tailored discounts and added-value services including staff training, point-of-sale marketing materials and menu design and print. Third party partnerships are selected carefully based on attributes such as the company’s customer service and sustainability credentials to offer discounts and services that align with HEINEKEN’s values.

“We are delighted to have won the 2023 Just Drinks Excellence (Social – Financial Support) award for the launch of our £3M energy support scheme to help pubs make sustainable changes. As we enter a crucial phase dealing with the climate crisis, pressure to reduce and eliminate emissions is mounting. On top of the last few years being extremely challenging for the hospitality industry, never has it been more important to reduce energy usage and ultimately lower costs. New EPC legislation also requires commercial premises to increase energy efficiencies with the potential risk of significant fines for not meeting requirements. Sustainability is widely regarded as key to a successful business in the 21st century, and therefore at the centre of our ambition to support a thriving and sustainable on-trade.

Our intentions to support the trade are further demonstrated through our eazle online platform. More than just an ecommerce website, Eazle Club offers a range of exclusive discounts across business essentials, including access to sustainable suppliers, products and services – from energy audits to bar equipment. We are also proud that HEINEKEN SmartDispense® customers collectively save over 60M pints of water, beer, cider and cleaning materials, and 273 tonnes of CO2 every year, and we continue to invest in sustainable technology innovations. As part of our Brew A Better World strategy, we aim to help operators make the right decisions to future-proof their business whilst also saving them money.”
