The global consumer industry experienced a 53% decline in the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in Q3 2022 compared with the previous quarter. The total number of environmental sustainability-related grants dropped by 15% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Environmental Sustainability in Consumer – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.

Notably, the number of environmental sustainability-related patent applications in the consumer industry was 259 in Q3 2022, versus 550 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 16% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Nestle filed the most environmental sustainability patents within the consumer industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 14 environmental sustainability-related patents in the quarter, compared with 8 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Procter & Gamble with 12 environmental sustainability patent filings, Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications (6 filings), and LG (5 filings) in Q3 2022.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 13% share of total patent filings

The largest share of environmental sustainability related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q3 2022 was in the US with 13%, followed by Japan (8%) and China (7%). The share represented by the US was 5% higher than the 8% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
